2 Samuel 11.

1 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. David, Bathsheba, and Uriah. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

It happened, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem.
2 It happened at evening, that David arose from off his bed, and walked on the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look on.
3 David sent and inquired after the woman. One said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”
4 David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in to him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned to her house.
5 The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.”
6 David sent to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” Joab sent Uriah to David.
7 When Uriah had come to him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.
8 David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house, and wash your feet.” Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and a gift from the king was sent after him.
9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his master, and didn’t go down to his house.
10 When they had told David, saying, “Uriah didn’t go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Haven’t you come from a journey? Why didn’t you go down to your house?”
11 Uriah said to David, “The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my master Joab, and the servants of my master, are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing!”
12 David said to Uriah, “Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day, and the next day.
13 When David had called him, he ate and drink before him; and he made him drunk. At evening, he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his master, but didn’t go down to his house.
14 It happened in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
15 He wrote in the letter, saying, “Send Uriah to the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck, and die.”
16 It happened, when Joab kept watch on the city, that he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew that valiant men were.
17 The men of the city went out, and fought with Joab. Some of the people fell, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;
19 and he commanded the messenger, saying, “When you have finished telling all the things concerning the war to the king,
20 it shall be that, if the king’s wrath arise, and he asks you, ‘Why did you go so near to the city to fight? Didn’t you know that they would shoot from the wall?
21 who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Didn’t a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’ then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’”
22 So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.
23 The messenger said to David, “The men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field, and we were on them even to the entrance of the gate.
24 The shooters shot at your servants from off the wall; and some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.”
25 Then David said to the messenger, “Thus you shall tell Joab, ‘Don’t let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Make your battle stronger against the city, and overthrow it.’ Encourage him.”
26 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.
27 When the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased YHWH!

2 Samuel 12.

1 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. Nathan's Parable and David's Confession. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

YHWH sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.
2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds,
3 but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him, and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was to him like a daughter.
4 A traveler came to the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man who had come to him.”
5 David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As YHWH lives, the man who has done this is worthy to die!
6 He shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity!”
7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man. This is what YHWH, the ELOHIM of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.
8 I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things.
9 Why have you despised the word of YHWH, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
10 Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’
11 “This is what YHWH says: ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.
12 For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’”
13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against YHWH!” Nathan said to David, “YHWH also has put away your sin. You will not die.
14 However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to YHWH’s enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.”
15 Nathan departed to his house. YHWH struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it was very sick.

\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. The Death of David's Son. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

David therefore begged ELOHIM for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night on the earth.
17 The elders of his house arose beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.
18 It happened on the seventh day, that the child died. The servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he didn’t listen to our voice. How will he then harm himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?”
19 But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.”
20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into the house of YHWH, and worshiped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he ate.
21 Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child was dead, you rose up and ate bread.”
22 He said, “While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows whether YHWH will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?’
23 But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”

24
\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. Solomon Is Born. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. YHWH loved him;
25 and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he named him Jedidiah, for YHWH’s sake.

26
\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. Rabbah Is Captured. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.
27 Joab sent messengers to David, and said, “I have fought against Rabbah. Yes, I have taken the city of waters.
28 Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.”
29 David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.
30 He took the crown of their king from off his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David’s head. He brought out the spoil of the city, exceeding much.
31 He brought out the people who were therein, and put them under saws, and under iron picks, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick kiln: and he did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Daniel 6.

1 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. The Plot Against Daniel. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred twenty satraps, who should be throughout the whole kingdom;
2 and over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one; that these satraps might give account to them, and that the king should have no damage.
3 Then this Daniel was distinguished above the presidents and the satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
4 Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel as touching the kingdom; but they could find no occasion nor fault, because he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.
5 Then these men said, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning decrees of his ELOHIM!
6 Then these presidents and satraps assembled together to the king, and said thus to him, King Darius, live forever.
7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the deputies and the satraps, the counselors and the governors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a strong decree, that whoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, except of you, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
8 Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it not be changed, according to the decrees of the Medes and Persians, which doesn’t alter.
9 Therefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.

10
\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. Daniel in the Lions' Den. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his room toward Jerusalem) and he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his ELOHIM, as he did before.
11 Then these men assembled together, and found Daniel making petition and supplication before his ELOHIM!
12 Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king’s decree: Haven’t you signed an decree, that every man who shall make petition to any god or man within thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which doesn’t alter.
13 Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, doesn’t respect you, O king, nor the decree that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.
14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was very displeased, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he labored until the going down of the sun to rescue him.
15 Then these men assembled together to the king, and said to the king, Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians, that no decree nor statute which the king establishes may be changed.
16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spoke and said to Daniel, Your ELOHIM whom you serve continually, he will deliver you.
17 A stone was brought, and laid on the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his masters; that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.

18
\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. Daniel Saved from the Lions. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep fled from him.
19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste to the den of lions.
20 When he came near to the den to Daniel, he cried with a lamentable voice; the king spoke and said to Daniel, Daniel, servant of the living ELOHIM, is your ELOHIM, whom you serve continually, able to deliver you from the lions?
21 Then Daniel said to the king, O king, live forever.
22 My ELOHIM has sent his angel, and has shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not hurt me; because as before him innocence was found in me; and also before you, O king, have I done no hurt.
23 Then was the king exceeding glad, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no kind of harm was found on him, because he had trusted in his ELOHIM!

24
\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. Darius Honors ELOHIM. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

The king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions mauled them, and broke all their bones in pieces, before they came to the bottom of the den.
25 Then king Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.
26 I make a decree, that in all the dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the ELOHIM of Daniel; for he is the living ELOHIM, and steadfast forever, His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed; and his dominion shall be even to the end.
27 He delivers and rescues, and he works signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.
28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Psalms 140.

1 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

  For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David.    Deliver me, YHWH, from the evil man.  Preserve me from the violent man;
2 those who devise mischief in their hearts.  They continually gather themselves together for war.
3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent.  Viper’s poison is under their lips.  Selah.
4 YHWH, keep me from the hands of the wicked.  Preserve me from the violent men who have determined to trip my feet.
5 The proud have hidden a snare for me,  they have spread the cords of a net by the path.  They have set traps for me.  Selah.
6 I said to YHWH, “You are my ELOHIM!”  Listen to the cry of my petitions, YHWH!
7 YHWH, ADONAI, the strength of my salvation,  you have covered my head in the day of battle.
8 YHWH, don’t grant the desires of the wicked.  Don’t let their evil plans succeed, or they will become proud.  Selah.
9 As for the head of those who surround me,  let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
10 Let burning coals fall on them.  Let them be thrown into the fire,  into miry pits, from where they never rise.
11 An evil speaker won’t be established in the earth.  Evil will hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
12 I know that YHWH will maintain the cause of the afflicted,  and justice for the needy.
13 Surely the righteous will give thanks to your name.  The upright will dwell in your presence.

Proverbs 5.

1 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. The Peril of Adultery. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\.

My son, pay attention to my wisdom.  Turn your ear to my understanding:
2 that you may maintain discretion,  that your lips may preserve knowledge.
3 For the lips of an adulteress drip honey.  Her mouth is smoother than oil,
4 But in the end she is as bitter as wormwood,  and as sharp as a two-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death.  Her steps lead straight to Sheol.
6 She gives no thought to the way of life.  Her ways are crooked, and she doesn’t know it.
7 Now therefore, my sons, listen to me.  Don’t depart from the words of my mouth.
8 Remove your way far from her.  Don’t come near the door of her house,
9 lest you give your honor to others,  and your years to the cruel one;
10 lest strangers feast on your wealth,  and your labors enrich another man’s house.
11 You will groan at your latter end,  when your flesh and your body are consumed,
12 and say, “How I have hated instruction,  and my heart despised reproof;
13 neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers,  nor turned my ear to those who instructed me!
14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin,  in the midst of the gathered assembly.”
15 Drink water out of your own cistern,  running water out of your own well.
16 Should your springs overflow in the streets,  streams of water in the public squares?
17 Let them be for yourself alone,  not for strangers with you.
18 Let your spring be blessed.  Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 A loving doe and a graceful deer   let her breasts satisfy you at all times.  Be captivated always with her love.
20 For why should you, my son, be captivated with an adulteress?  Why embrace the bosom of another?
21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of YHWH!  He examines all his paths.
22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him.  The cords of his sin hold him firmly.
23 He will die for lack of instruction.  In the greatness of his folly, he will go astray.
