Judges
11:34-to-end,12:1-15.
34 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. Jephthah's Daughter. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\
Jephthah came to Mizpah to his
house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with
dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor
daughter.
35 It happened, when he saw her, that he tore
his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and
you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to YHWH, and I
can’t go back.”
36 She said to him, “My father, you have opened
your mouth to YHWH; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your
mouth, because YHWH has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the
children of Ammon.”
37 She said to her father, “Let this thing be
done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the
mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”
38 He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two
months: and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on
the mountains.
39 It happened at the end of two months, that
she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had
vowed: and she was a virgin. It was a custom in Israel,
40 that the daughters of Israel went yearly to
celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
1 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. Jephthah's Conflict with
Ephraim. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\
The men of Ephraim were gathered
together, and passed northward; and they said to Jephthah, “Why did you pass
over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didn’t call us to go with you?
We will burn your house around you with fire!”
2 Jephthah said to them, “I and my people were
at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, you didn’t
save me out of their hand.
3 When I saw that you didn’t save me, I put my
life in my hand, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and YHWH
delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day, to fight
against me?”
4 Then Jephthah gathered together all the men
of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim,
because they said, “You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst
of Ephraim, and in the midst of Manasseh.”
5 The Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan
against the Ephraimites. It was so, that when the fugitives of Ephraim said,
“Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he
said, “No;”
6 then they said to him, “Now say
‘Shibboleth;’” and he said “Sibboleth;” for he couldn’t manage to pronounce it
right: then they siezed him, and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. At that
time, forty-two thousand of Ephraim fell.
7 Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then
Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in the cities of Gilead.
8 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\
After him Ibzan of Bethlehem
judged Israel.
9 He had thirty sons; and thirty daughters he
sent abroad, and thirty daughters he brought in from abroad for his sons. He
judged Israel seven years.
10 Ibzan died, and was buried at Bethlehem.
11 After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel;
and he judged Israel ten years.
12 Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried in
Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
13 After him Abdon the son of Hillel the
Pirathonite judged Israel.
14 He had forty sons and thirty sons’ sons, who
rode on seventy donkey colts: and he judged Israel eight years.
15 Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite
died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of
the Amalekites.
Job
40.
1 Moreover YHWH answered Job,
2 “Shall he who argues contend with the
Almighty? He who argues with ELOHIM,
let him answer it.”
3 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. Job's Response to ELOHIM. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\
Then Job answered YHWH,
4 “Behold, I am of small account. What shall I
answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.
5 I have spoken once, and I will not
answer; Yes, twice, but I will proceed
no further.”
6 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. ELOHIM's Challenge to Job. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\
Then YHWH answered Job out of the
whirlwind,
7 “Now brace yourself like a man. I will question you, and you will answer me.
8 Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be
justified?
9 Or do you have an arm like EL? Can you thunder with a voice like him?
10 “Now deck yourself with excellency and
dignity. Array yourself with honor and
majesty.
11 Pour out the fury of your anger. Look at everyone who is proud, and bring him
low.
12 Look at everyone who is proud, and humble
him. Crush the wicked in their place.
13 Hide them in the dust together. Bind their faces in the hidden place.
14 Then I will also admit to you that your own right hand can save you.
15 “See now, behemoth, which I made as well as
you. He eats grass as an ox.
16 Look now, his strength is in his
thighs. His force is in the muscles of
his belly.
17 He moves his tail like a cedar. The sinews of his thighs are knit together.
18 His bones are like tubes of brass. His limbs are like bars of iron.
19 He is the chief of the ways of EL! He who made him gives him his sword.
20 Surely the mountains produce food for
him, where all the animals of the field
play.
21 He lies under the lotus trees, in the covert of the reed, and the marsh.
22 The lotuses cover him with their shade. The willows of the brook surround him.
23 Behold, if a river overflows, he doesn’t
tremble. He is confident, though the
Jordan swells even to his mouth.
24 Shall any take him when he is on the
watch, or pierce through his nose with
a snare?
Psalms

1 \Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnestLOW”\. A Song of Ascents. Of David.. .\Vce=Speaker=“LeslieEarnest”\
A Song of Ascents. By David.
YHWH, my heart isn’t haughty, nor my eyes lofty; nor do I concern myself with great matters, or things too wonderful for me.
2 Surely I have stilled and quieted my
soul, like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 Israel, hope in YHWH, from this time forth and forevermore.
Proverbs
27.
1 Don’t boast about tomorrow; for you don’t know what a day may bring
forth.
2 Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.
3 A stone is heavy, and sand is a burden; but
a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.
4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is overwhelming;
but who is able to stand before jealousy?
5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.
7 A full soul loathes a honeycomb; but to a hungry soul, every bitter thing is
sweet.
8 As a bird that wanders from her nest, so is a man who wanders from his home.
9 Perfume and incense bring joy to the
heart; so does earnest counsel from a
man’s friend.
10 Don’t forsake your friend and your father’s
friend. Don’t go to your brother’s
house in the day of your disaster:
better is a neighbor who is near than a distant brother.
11 Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart,
then I can answer my tormentor.
12 A prudent man sees danger and takes
refuge; but the simple pass on, and
suffer for it.
13 Take his garment when he puts up collateral
for a stranger. Hold it for a wayward
woman!
14 He who blesses his neighbor with a loud
voice early in the morning, it will be
taken as a curse by him.
15 A continual dropping on a rainy day and a contentious wife are alike:
16 restraining her is like restraining the
wind, or like grasping oil in his right
hand.
17 Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.
18 Whoever tends the fig tree shall eat its
fruit. He who looks after his master
shall be honored.
19 As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.
20 Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied; and a man’s eyes are never satisfied.
21 The crucible is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but man is refined by his praise.
22 Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a
pestle along with grain, yet his
foolishness will not be removed from him.
23 Know well the state of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds:
24 for riches are not forever, nor does even the crown endure to all
generations.
25 The hay is removed, and the new growth appears, the grasses of the hills are gathered in.
26 The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats are the price of a field.
27 There will be plenty of goats’ milk for your
food, for your family’s food, and for the nourishment of your servant
girls.
